What to Expect with an Orthodontic Analysis

Teeth aren’t always the healthiest part of our body. In fact, many people struggle with excellent tooth health. Fortunately, there are ways around years of terrible habits, diseases, conditions, and genetic pieces. An orthodontic analysis, otherwise known as a cephalometric analysis, is a clinical application where a professional assesses the dental and skeletal relationship within the human skull. While orthodontists do offer this service, it is also provided by dentists, surgeons, doctors, and more. The reason dentists need to assess the relationship is to better understand the overall health of a patient. It is a treatment planning tool. Once doctors are more familiar with the issues, they can create an efficient course of action. There are two popular methods often used. One is called the Steiner Analysis and the other is the Downs Analysis.

How Do Cephalometric Radiographs Play into Orthodontic Analysis?

If you’re researching into orthodontic analysis, chances are you’re also finding information about cephalometric radiographs. One cannot fully assess the health of an individual without the use of the radiographs. This special tool helps professionals to identify the relationship between soft tissues and the bony areas. If there are facial growth issues, medical experts can tell before pursuing treatment. Sometimes, these deformities can be treated. These images are accurate portraits of each patient, giving dentists and orthodontists the chance to see what they’re in for, what treatments are best suitable for the patient, and where they can provide the most assistance. It is a type of X-ray, though it does not use the same amount of radiation as traditional machinery.

There are a few landmarks or points of interest that doctors use when performing an orthodontic analysis. There are lines that form angles, planes, and vectors. While this may seem unimportant to those without a trained eye, those angles, planes, and vectors are of the upmost importance. It is how medical experts detect any abnormalities and work to create a plan.

Are There Any Downsides to the Steiner Analysis?

Cecil C. Steiner came up with the Steiner Analysis in 1953. There are a few arguments surrounding this particular analysis because it uses the Nasion point as a reference. This point, according to some medical experts, is not stable enough to be used as a center point. The reason being is that this placement changes over the growth of a person and therefore, may change.  Some people prefer the Downs Analysis, though both are effective and safe.
